Follow-Up to Shifter's Earlier Post

JP over at Time has a blog post about the same issue Shifter brought up a week or so ago.  The first commenter actually brings the article Shifter blogged to JP's attention.  Both the post and the (thus far polite, although it's only a matter of time--Tuned In has trolls on both ends of the political spectrum) comments are interesting.

I hope you enjoy it as much as I am. I really respect Roose for being so open-minded, and I'm finding the book very entertaining.

It reminds me of Morgan Spurlock's series 30 Days...but on steroids. And those people aren't giving up a semester of college for the experience, which I don't think I would have been mature enough to do. Which is a pity, when you think about it--it's probably the last time any of us are quite this open to new ideas, and the last time that we can take time to explore something so different without uprooting careers, families, and homes.

My favorite part of the article was this: "They've also constructed self-reinforcing belief fortresses, in which media debunking of their beliefs only serves to confirm them."

The "belief fortress" is I think an empirical fact. Demonstrating it to one inside of said fortress, however, would be almost impossible. Ah, therein lies the rub. Oh, also, which side is in the fortress? Both sides will say the other one is. Damn frustrating.
